Ada West District Assembly Hands Over Education, Health and Sanitation Projects to Six Communities.

ADA WEST, Volta Region — The Ada West District Assembly (AWDA) has handed over a number of education, health and sanitation facilities and projects to beneficiary communities in the Volta Regional district.

The projects, handed over between Tuesday, September 29 and Wednesday, September 30, 2026, included classroom blocks, CHPS compounds and toilet facilities in Koluedor, Bonikope, Aditcherekope, Luhour, Abuanorkope-Lolonya and the Ada Senior High Technical School (ASTECH).

At Koluedor, the Assembly handed over a 10-seater KVIP toilet facility to the Koluedor R/C Basic School, while the Bonikope D/A Basic School received a three-unit Junior High School (JHS) classroom block with stores. Aditcherekope also received a six-unit classroom block with a six-seater KVIP toilet facility, while Luhour received a CHPS compound with two-unit staff quarters and office furniture.

At Abuanorkope-Lolonya, the Assembly handed over a CHPS compound with accommodation for a midwife and office furniture. The Ada Senior High Technical School also received a 20-seater toilet facility, comprising 10 seats each for boys and girls.

Speaking at the ceremony grounds, the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Modjifa Tanihu J.J.F. Mills-Nkrumah, said the projects were provided in response to identified needs of the beneficiary communities.

At Koluedor, he said pupils of the R/C Basic School previously had to resort to the bush whenever they needed to attend to nature's call, making the provision of the toilet facility necessary. He urged residents and school authorities to take good care of the projects and ensure their proper maintenance.

At Aditcherekope, the District Education Director, Dr. Stephen Arthur, also indicated that the new school was constructed because he noticed the community had only a Kindergarten (KG), compelling children to travel long distances to Afiadenyigba to access primary education.

He said he had to engage the DCE on the situation, which resulted in the construction of the Aditcherekope D/A Primary School. Dr. Arthur urged the community to take ownership of the facility and maintain it properly.

Community members also commended Miss Gladys Sedolo, the KG teacher, for her dedication and appealed for her appointment as the first head teacher of the new school. Dr. Arthur disclosed that Miss Sedolo had already been appointed Head Teacher of the school.

At Luhour, the DCE said the CHPS compound followed a commitment made by the Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Daniel Bessey, during the 2024 parliamentary campaign.

According to the DCE Hon. Modjifa Tanihu J.J.F. Mills-Nkrumah, the MP, who was then a parliamentary candidate, promised to establish a health post at Luhour if the NDC won the election. He said following the NDC's victory in the December 7, 2024 Parliamentary Election and his subsequent appointment as DCE, the Assembly decided to fulfil that promise to provide the community with the facility.

The Ada West District Health Director, Dr. Maxwell Onasis Fiadjo, said the CHPS compound would strengthen the provision of primary healthcare services in the community. He urged residents to take responsibility for maintaining the facility, stressing that CHPS facilities were community-based.

At the Ada Senior High Technical School, the DCE said improving the condition of the district's only secondary school remained one of his priorities. He disclosed that the Assembly had requested a multi-dimensional Science Block from government for the school, in addition to a 24-unit GETFund classroom project already secured for the institution.

The Headmaster of the school, Mr. Thomas Vroom, said a structural integrity assessment conducted on the old toilet facilities showed that they were unsafe. He said the school subsequently wrote to the DCE through the Assembly for assistance, resulting in the construction of the new facility. On this account, the DCE urged the students and school authorities to maintain the new toilet facility and ensure that it remained clean.

The Ada West District Education Director said despite the limited resources available to the Assembly, efforts were being made to improve educational infrastructure in the district. He urged students to maintain a healthy learning environment and use technology for educational purposes.

The Presiding Member of the Ada West District Assembly and Assembly Member for Bonikope, Hon. Lawrence Katey Ngunekpeku, urged the DCE to ensure that the 24-unit classroom block project for the Ada Senior High Technical School was completed.

Traditional leaders, Assembly Members, technocrats of the Ada West District Assembly, education and health officials and other stakeholders attended the various handing-over ceremonies.
