Morocco Ghost GFA: Scrapped Tangier Friendly Leaves Ghana’s AFCON Prep in Ruins.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has scrapped the international friendly match against Ghana that was slated to take place on October 4, 2026, at the Grand Stade de Tanger. The postponed game offered valuable preparation time for the Black Stars ahead of their crucial return fixtures against Somalia – but it has now left the GFA in utter chaos just days before the team was due to depart.
Compounding the confusion over the fixture, the Moroccans have refused to comment on the decision despite extensive logistics preparations already made for the match. The FRMF had officially opened the doors to ticket sales for the public on September 27 and had begun authorizing international media accreditation. Speculation is rife that player availability or club fixtures influenced the move but no official reasons have emerged at any level of either football governing body.
This cancellation is a crippling blow to both the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and senior national team, currently enduring one of its most difficult periods. The Black Stars had sought to use the high-profile fixture against Morocco (ranked fifth globally) to identify and address some of the team’s tactical flaws following an embarrassing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign. Instead, the technical staff has lost a valuable opportunity to evaluate squad depth and boost morale in camp.
After the disastrous start to the AFCON qualifiers, which saw them suffer humiliating defeats in their opening Group C fixtures, Ghana have sparked public outrage after suffering successive, disappointing defeats. Following the 2-1 reverse to Cote D Ivoire away from home, the Black Stars have suffered yet another, stunning defeat to The Gambia – losing 4-2 at the Accra Sports Stadium. Early goals from Ernest Nuamah and Felix Afena-Gyan had put Ghana in control before conceding four goals to the bottom seeds, leaving the four-time African champions rock bottom with zero points.
The public fury has fuelled calls for the immediate resignation of the 73-year-old Portuguese tactician, Carlos Queiroz. Speaking to the press after the humbling against the Scorpions, Queiroz offered a public apology to the Ghanaian people but firmly believed that resignation would not be the solution to the current malaise. Queiroz argued that the simplest option when dealing with a crisis is always to resign but the GFA board must conduct a thorough assessment of the problems before taking action to turn the team’s fortunes around.
Adding to the frustration for the Black Stars is that this will be the second international friendly match to be called off in a short period. Ghana had initially negotiated an international friendly match against Tanzania to complete their October fixtures. That game was cancelled at the eleventh hour after both football federations failed to agree on terms and conditions, leaving the GFA without any high-profile African opposition.
With time running out before the commencement of competitive matches, the GFA is scrambling to find an alternative opponent for the October window. These weeks are critical to Queiroz in terms of instilling his defensive philosophies before facing a tough, must-win double-header against Somalia in November. Having already suffered the ignominy of missing out on the 2025 AFCON tournament, the four-time African champions have little room for error if they are to qualify for the 2027 showpiece
